ciao i tutti!
sim and i have made it to naples after a gloriously lazy half day in Ponza eating pasticceria specialities and drinking coffee (yes I have aquired the taste as long as it has two sugars!), and reading in the sun.
we have found a very laid back alternative cool (bordering on pompous)area, somewhat akin to fitzroy - in which we have enjoyed watching the last half of the semi final of the UEFA cup between AC Milan and Manchester United. Unfortunately for me, AC Milan were victorious and have made it through to the final against Liverpool. As usual, I was going for the underdog and given that we are in Italy, and everyone else was going for Milan (inc. Sim), I couldnt possibly throw my support that way as well.
Yesterday Sim and I had a great day exploring the isle of Ponza on a dilapidated old hire scooter that couldnt pass 35kms/hr to save itself. probably a good thing as I was in control with Sim as pillion passenger half the time (nb. in australia you need at least a year's experience before this is allowed, and here I had but two minutes experience as a solo driver). I was going so well - taking the turns like a pro, until we had to do a 180 degree turn - unfortunately we didnt quite make it and ended up driving on the side of the embankment on the left hand side of the road (wrong wrong wrong in Italia!!) I tried to put the brakes on but it was so close to the accelerator that I merely succeeded in accelerating further up the hill. Once we came to a stop, we gracefully slid back down to the level of the road, not without the left hand side of the scooter coated in dirt and grass. Not to worry, we emerged relatively unscathed- ready to take on the next few kms. The views along the road were amazing, and the trip as a whole was completely relaxing and therefore very worthwhile (although recommended in April or May during the week - molto tranquillo!).
tomorrow we are heading to the Museo Archiologica di Napoli and the Catacombs nearby (plus a bit of shopping on the side, and taste testing of the famous Napoli pizza of course!).
Ciao for now! Tanti baci, Em. xx

By the time you guys get back you will no doubt be requiring the services of one of our scooters both of which, as luck would have it, are used to hitting things. the hols sound like they are becoming more exciting each day. go milan, i watched the match here but it has caused some dillema as i generally support liverpool. not this time hey. otherwise all is well and thankfully profitable albeit that you guys are causing my feet to itch dreadfully.
great love etc dad & hendo
hi dad!
great to hear from you so often! we may have to take you up on the scooter offer - however I think that a learners course would be most beneficial at this preliminary stage... I will of course be going for AC Milan when we watch the next match and Em for Liverpool which should make for some interesting ribbing when the italians pull through!! I never knew you were a Liverpool fan - we are hoping to catch the football whilst down south, however as luck would have it, Napoli are playing away this weekend (we think). glad to hear you guys are going well. i am definitely planning a trip over to SA when we get back at some stage to catch up with you guys and to see the new baby as well... love you lots, simone xxxx
HI Simone,
Very concerning news re the bike! Glad to hear all is well. Enjoy Naples but take care and watch out for maffia.
I'm looking forward to hearing your views on Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. It is a beautiful part of the world I am sure you will agree once you get there. Feels as though you have been away forever - look forward to seeing you when you return! Love of love Mum xx
Hi guys,
Phil left for his adventure today. He had a bit of a freak out 'cos he couldn't find his passport and spent much of the night looking for it - then found it in an obvious place(his safe)! Whoops!
I had my last tutoring session tonight so am feeling fabulous! Also finshed my parent teacher interviews today - always good to have those behind you.
Thinking of you - as I do often throughout the day. Hope you're well and happy and still seeing/experiencing amazing things.

Hey Simone,
Thought you might like to hear that the AASC has received extended funding for the next three years as part of Peter Costello's budget last night! All good news - so now I can continue to pay the bills for the next three years at least and then it's over to you - so you've got three years before I become reliant on you!! Anyway, good news and thought you might like to hear it. Lots of other budget news - Nanny gets a one off bonus of $500 - not sure what that is about. Anyway, hope all is well over there in southern Italy. It will a good day when we can travel via cyperspace and then I would be there with you!! Lots of love Mum xx
hi mum,
thanks for the two messages! i love coming on and seeing that people have written.. we have been avoiding the internet deliberately as for a few days there it was becoming too regular and a money drain.
good to hear that the AASC is alive and well and that I have 3 years to prepare :)
my more cynical side says of course they extended it - there are so many fat kids out there that the Govt has to be seen to be doing something to be combatting the trend.
the 500 will surely come in handy for nan... an expensive vote buy, but im sure it will pay off for the libs in the majority of that age group. hopefully it means they have hit the wall to start buying a traditional voter base off.
only ten days til we are back (it hit us last night). not to worry, we have a lot of relaxing scheduled before then, and some more discovering to do - southern italy is fantastic!!
love you lots,
simone xxxx
Good to hear from you - I was getting a little concerned as there was no news for a week! Make the most of the coming week and enjoy every minute. I must say I am looking forward to seeing you again next Sunday - we will have lots to catch up on. Say hi to Emma too! Love you lots, Mum xx
